Argentina Dominant in 2-0 Victory Over Canada in Copa América Opener

Messi Leads Defending Champions to Early Win

Canada Impresses Despite Loss

Argentina, the defending Copa América champions, kicked off their title defense with a dominant 2-0 victory over Canada on Thursday night. Lionel Messi played a key role in the win, setting up the opening goal and scoring the second.

Argentina started the match strongly, but it was Canada who had the best chance of the opening half. Alphonso Davies found himself in space inside the Argentina penalty area, but his shot was well saved by Emiliano Martínez. Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau also made several impressive saves to keep Argentina at bay.

Argentina eventually broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Messi found Ángel Di María with a through ball, and Di María rounded Crépeau to slot home the opening goal. Messi then sealed the victory in the 83rd minute, finishing off a counterattack with a clinical strike.

Despite the loss, Canada impressed in their Copa América debut. They defended resolutely for long periods and created several good chances of their own. They will be hoping to build on this performance when they face Uruguay in their next match on Monday.
